Grayson, all smiles despite the seconds ago scuffle with Adam,
smiled to the rest of the assembly, briefly looking over her shoulder
to the man in the loft, then took her seat in the 3rd groom pew.

She was just in time for the wedding march started off as Adam
and his party took their place to the left of the bearded priest. The
pale blue bridesmaids made their way of the aisle, first Sarah and Linda,
then Cynthia and Julie, white and red roses in hand. A professional photo-
grapher, somewhere aloft, caught them in focus and closed the shutter
on them, but there was no posing this time, for they were all smiles and
blushing, barely able to maintain their composure.

The assembly stood as the wedding march changed tone as Monique
and Hillary were braced in the doorway, Monique on Hillary's right. They
walked forward slowly as Monique noticed, out of the corner of her eye,
that it was now Adam barely able to contain his feelings, his mouth
opening for a silent expression of love. She arched her eyebrows at him
in a quick signal and he returned the gesture. They continued walking
forward, cameras capturing them in their wake, past employees, friends,
known people such as Grayson, leering like a serpent, and the nanny
holding Daniel till they reached the altar. The happiness of the moment
obscure the observance of how oddly cheerful Grayson had suddenly become.

The Wedding Continues

As Monique took her place to Adam's left, Hillary stepped off to
the side, and took her reserved seat. The priest, all smiles and nods,
gave permission for the guests to be seated, as Monique passed the
boutique to Cynthia.

"We are gather here today in the presence of God to join this man,"
the priest said as he pointed to Adam, "and this woman," turning to Monique,
"in holy matrimony."

"Now, in truth, not I, nor any other Pastor nor Priest, can
create a marriage." Did the priest take a secret joy in the look of
sudden confusion on Adam? If he did, he failed to notice that Monique
was not fooled as she just slowly closed her eyes on him.

"Today, Adam Louder and Monique Durand, stand before God to declare
their love and their desire to be husband and wife."

"Who gives this woman to be married?" Hillary, was already up and
in motion, to stand directly behind Adam.

Without ceremony, she calmly said, "I do," and then moved off.

A little black and white figure exited the first right pew. Grayson
instantly recognized who it was and gasped his name. "Daniel!" All the
cheerfulness vanished from her face.

Adam, on the other hand, knew of no reason why not to be cheerful,
but rather to increase the happiness of the moment. He picked his son up,
with smiles, and proclaimed to the world, "I got him. Little guy did not
want to be left out."

Grayson, in a rush, charged to the altar to retrieve her son, calling
his name. "Give him to me!"

Adam, confused, defensive: "Get back to your seat!" Was this why
she was here uninvited? To cause a scene at the altar? If that's the case,
then there's a quick answer to this. There were advantages to having
a bouncer as a best man. "Get her out of here!" But oddly, enough, there
seem to be no release in the struggle, no removal of Grayson. Nothing,
except deft, strong hands removing Daniel his grasp, pulling off to Monique's
side.

"Federal mediator," a soft voice gently said. One that he had heard
before only infrequently. In a glance, a beige pantsuit with a white
blouse. And a face. Cally, who only seconds before was seated, who saw that
someone had to take charge in this struggle, and that getting Daniel to
safety was the first step, divide Grayson's attention.

Cally, with her cat prowess, side stepped enough to place Daniel
in Hillary's hands, the closest friend with nothing in them. She then
returned her attention, her presence to handling the matter of Grayson.....

.....and was hurled back into the priest as something bolted into
her, struck her between her breasts. Her impact dispersed the wedding
party to both sides in shambles, but she only heard the distant sound of
the distinctness of the rifle crack, and the pounding of the blood in
her ears, the pain aflame in her body. She was so suddenly weak as the world
was fading out on her so very quickly, utter blackness filling her world,
a very silent one.
